Wildlife of the Pantanal
The Pantanal is a vast wetland area with an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. Explore this spectacular region on foot, 4WD, boat or canoe. Given the Pantanal's open landscape, wildlife viewing is usually very rewarding with possible sightings of alligators, capybaras, otters, monkeys, macaws, cormorants, ibis, parrots and toucans.

The Pantanal is a huge wetlands area in the heart of South America. It is not easily accessible as access is via a 2 hour flight from one of Brazil's major cities followed by a 3 hour road transfer on poor roads. The water level in the wetlands drops 4 metres from the end of the wet season and it is a wildlife paradise. We saw over 40 different birds in 3 days and our guide was amazing at spotting them and identifying them. We had fun fishing for piraņa and the lodge cooked them in soup for us! Most trips were by flat-bottomed boat trips skippered by great local boatmen who also found us wonderful sunsets. We also had some walks, horse riding and a night safari although this was a very rough ride. This tour based at Posada Rio Mutum is worth including in your travel to Brazil.
