High Atlas Trek
A superb introduction to the mountains and traditions of Morocco, this trip combines a trek in the High Atlas Mountains with visits to the medinas and palaces of Marrakesh. Explore the narrow alleyways of the souqs and admire exquisite architecture in one of the country's most impressive imperial cities. Outside the bustle of Marrakesh we walk through traditional Berber villages, following trails to alpine pastures set beneath the impressive backdrop of the peaks of the High Atlas mountain range. We learn to respect the simplicity of life in these mountain villages and are awed by spectacular scenery. An ascent of Jebal Toubkal (4167m), the highest mountain in Morocco, is something to aim for on our trek. Not to be under-estimated, reaching the summit is a great achievement and a fitting highlight to round out this adventure.

We have to give 100% full marks to Abdoul our guide. He was very accomplished. Once he got to know us all, he was very warm and friendly. He was much fitter than we were, of course, and he adjusted the higher route programme to a less demanding route to the summit via Umlil, which was appreciated. BTW, we all thought that the second day was VERY long, and as we were camping, we could have stopped earlier. We all thought that the programme for that day should be changed. The food was MAGNIFICENT. We felt that our muleteers and cook were superb, too. They all worked in quite primitive conditions to make our trek interesting and successful, and how they managed to cook in the conditions they have is beyond us! Top marks to the cook and muleteers. Very pleasant and happy people to be with. I am not sure that Casablanca had much to offer, but Essaoira was superb. We had a great riad there and we loved the visits we made that enabled us to understand the co-operatives and their aims. This was a memorable trip. We NZers are all reuniting in October, and have already swapped photos and notes. I personally appreciated getting to know something of the Berber culture. Thank you - heaps of unforgettable memories of this trek.
